Come on Baby, Light My Kindle Fire

My family gave me a first generation Kindle Fire for my birthday. The initial shipment went out last Tuesday.  I had mine by Friday.  All I can say is, "Oh. My. God.!"

I am not one for new gadgets, unless they are food-related.  I don't have a smart phone; my car is a Subaru Impreza Sport because the MSRP includes the heated seats and a 6 CD changer. We do have a nice plasma HD tv which I insisted on in 2007 because my client had a 2 day sale on Panasonic and said they were the very best.  It has proven to be so.  By today's standards with large 50-60" screens, it's a  Medium.  But I've never regretted the purchase.

I've been intrigued by the iPad and Kindle Fire thanks to all the hubbub surrounding their features.  Hard not to notice when every trade publication, tv ad and magazine or newspaper article espouses the joy of owning one.  I did not, however, ask for one.

My sons, clever fellows they are, thought it would make a great family gift for the big (read "painful") day.  My husband agreed and did his due diligence. He loves to sift through the minutia of features; things like capacity, power, battery life, and  # pixels on a screen.  All the crap I'll never read, much less understand.  He determined the Kindle Fire would give me everything I could possibly want and more than I've dreamed of, for a modest price (especially compared to the iPad).

The menfolk were correct on all counts.  I have been obsessed all weekend learning the ins and outs of my new toy.  I am like a 10 year old with his first Game Boy.  I can't put it down, stop playing with it, or focus on anything else.  It's like a recreational drug.  It's fun, adventurous, there's always something new to experience and I want more!

I'll probably weigh in on the Kindle as my love grows.  Until then, here are a couple of links to buying tablets and the best 5 tablets: http://reviews.cnet.com/best-tablets/

Gotta go.  Pandora & Pulse are calling my name.

Happy you like your new gift! Am not game oriented or like to push buttons, or touch a screen,so it would not be for me:) Happy Thanksgiving!

I love "real" books, especially antique leather-bound volumes, but the versatility of such an item makes it a "someday purchase." The paper and space you can save alone...!!!

I have the iPad so I understand your excitement. It's also wonderful that we are up on the latest to keep current with internet/blogs/kids/grandchildren. Good for us!

I have both an Ipad and a Kindle. What I need to know about the Kindle fire, is how long a battery charge lasts. Do you know yet?
They look really awesome!

I hope you continue to enjoy your toy. I prefer to hold a book in my hands, especially old books from the library that have the musty library old paper scent.

Love,
Lola

I'm so happy for you having the Kindle. I've heard that some analysts expect the device to be a strong competitor to Apple's iPad. Smell some competition here.

Hot dog sounds great! I'm starting small with a smartphone and going from there.

I got mine last week too. I'm not sure it will replace books for me, but I love all the other things that it does.
