Autumnal Equinox 2011

"Forest Floor"

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, today is the first day of Fall.

September & October are the magic months in New England.  The first time you visit, it's probably to see Fall foliage.  You will not be disappointed.  In fact, having lived in Utah, Kentucky and Virginia, all of which have beautiful fall seasons, I was surprised by how much more vibrant the foliage is in New England.  It is unsurpassed.

In the beginning, there are hints of color here and there, in a low lying field where the cold settles in, on a stray branch no longer catching the sun's rays.

"Autumn Barn"

Color begins to spread.   As the weather turns chilly and the sun sets earlier, the leaves have no choice but to change.

"Reflections"

The low growing tree below is widespread along the sides of the road with brilliant yellow and red leaves.
I'm told it's a variety of Sumac.

The rust on the iron trestle mimics the rust in the leaves.

Finally, the colors are at their peak and you know you've witnessed Nature's last gift before the snow comes, before you get to freeze your ass off for another 5 months.

"Autumn Birches"

This is the reason we fell in love with New England.  It's one of the reasons we're still here after 14 years.

What fabulous photos! Just gorgeous! But since you'll be heading South soon, you'll be heading back into summer. For a great time, you might want to check out this place. Cheers and Happy Fall!

That "reflections" looks like a painting by Monet. Gorgeous. I grew up in Boston and lived for 5 1/2 years in Maine before moving out of the US, so I'm familiar with New England's incomparable falls. And the ridiculously long winters! Thanks for the photos of my favorite season.

CG, these photos are STUNNING!! You are making me want to fly north for the fall. Everything is dried up and brown here. We will miss our late (and not nearly as stunning, but still beautiful) fall. I will enjoy fall vicariously through blogland. Your husband outdid himself on these! blessings ~ tanna

Absolutely beautiful pictures, the color is truly amazing. When I lived in Michigan, we would travel to the Upper Peninsula to look at the colors in the fall, and they were like these.

Thank you all for the feedback. My husband shot these photos over a number of years. The most recent is "September in NH" which he just shot. The rest are selected from many captures dating back about 6 years or so.

Loved the counterpoint of the poetic descriptions leading up to "freeze your ass off!" Fun... and beautiful shots, too. The leaves are turning here in Massachusetts, as well, of course. Certainly spices up the scenery.

Tomas: I'll pass along the compliment to mi esposa. Spain, which I visited many years ago, reminded me of Southern California. If I correctly recall my physical geography, it's in the same isotherm. That said, I'm guessing there is very little Fall there?

Foxy: Thanks! I had to laugh myself. It's just SO TRUE, isn't it?

In Spain we have some climates. I live in Salamanca, in Castilla, and we have a harsh Winter and a short transition from Summer. Where did you stay in Spain?
My family and I love your country and we have visited it several times: the West Coast, Alaska, NYC, Texas, Louisiana, Chicago... We hope come back.
