My husband and I took a trip to Vermont over the long Labor Day weekend. Vermont is verdant, pastoral, full of farms, barns and black and white cows. There were so many highlights, here are a few Vermont visiting tips:
- If you like shopping and art and want to see where some very literary and wealthy Vermonters live (like John Irving) go to Manchester Village. The Southern VermontArts College is a phenomenal place as well. The outlets in the village are housed in archi-tecturally simpatico style in keeping with the original architecture of the area. Beautiful place!
- The most bustling city in the state is Burlington. On the shores of Lake Champlaign, Burlington is home to seven colleges, has an incredible night life and shopping district,and is a well planned and aesthetically pleasing city. Also named one of the Top 10Cities To Live by Sperling this year. Major city treasure is the Shelburne Farm and Museum, donated and funded by a wealthy woman mid-20th century. Current majorshowing is the Ansel Adams Ed Burtynsky "Landscapes" show. It was fantastic.
- Stowe, home to the Trapp Family Lodge, the great and famous Mt. Mansfield and other ski mountains, is nestled in the Green Mountains. Surrounding area is forested state parks, a
beautiful drive in and out. Lots of fantastic restaurants to choose from. We had a marvelous
Thai meal. I do not recommend the Green Mountain Inn. It was $200 per
for a "standard" room and that room needed major upgrading. We were particularly galled by
the old window unit A/C which maintained an uncomfortable 75+ degrees during the hot &
humid Labor Day weekend. We definitely won't stay there again.
